Sardis & Philadelphia

In this lesson, Sardis is warned against spiritual lifelessness behind its reputation for being alive, while Philadelphia shows how Christ honors a weak but faithful church—opening doors of opportunity, preserving it, and promising eternal reward.

Passage: Rev 3:1-13 Theme: Christ rejects empty religion
and rewards faithful obedience.
Translation: KJV

"He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels."

— Revelation 3:5 (KJV)
  • Sardis had a name for life, but was spiritually dead.
  • The remedy for Sardis was watchfulness, remembrance, and repentance.
  • Spiritual decline can exist without open persecution or heresy.
  • Christ alone holds the key of David.
  • Faithfulness brings Christ’s vindication and keeping power.
  • The overcomer is promised permanence, identity, and belonging.
  • When comparing Smyrna & Pergamos we see that Jesus deals differently with different needs.
